Comptoir des Mines Galerie will celebrate its 10th anniversary on 25 September 2025 in the iconic Galerie Bab Rouah in Rabat. How surprising that a Marrakesh-based gallery would choose to expand to Rabat, given that it has been exhibiting at numerous international fairs in recent years, from Mexico City to Dubai?
Among the reasons for this is our appreciation for the gallery itself. Galerie Bab Rouah is undoubtedly the “reference” in our art history, where the most illustrious Moroccan artists have been able to assert a modern artistic style since the 1960s. Furthermore, with the emergence of numerous commercial galleries between Casablanca and Marrakech over the last twenty years, many major artists on the contemporary and emerging scene have never had the opportunity to exhibit there individually or collectively, rightly or wrongly. For this reason, we felt it was imperative to approach Galerie Bab Rouah with great humility in order to engage in dialogue with audiences in the capital and present our artistic vision as actors from the Global South who are determined to defend other artistic approaches and ideas, drawing on our social and human context to question and answer a multitude of concerns.
On the eve of our tenth anniversary, and following in the footsteps of the ‘L'Atelier’ gallery in Rabat in 1971, we wanted to organise a collective exhibition accompanied by a retrospective publication presenting works from iconic exhibitions we have held since October 2016 in Marrakech, which have succeeded in introducing new ideas, new approaches and, above all, new artists to our art scene.
Since its creation, the gallery has been nourished by ideals stemming from the Casablanca movement to invent an artistic modernity based on a certain cultural heritage and to take part in the major societal issues that animate or affect our country and, more broadly, our region. We have never championed a particular aesthetic or attempted to impose a single conception of the creative act or reduce it to a simple practice of materials and gestures. Our experience to date has enabled us to provide a platform and an audience for many sincere and authentic voices from various regions of Morocco, who have been able to bear witness to the social upheavals they have observed from a personal perspective.
During these 10 years of activity, we have attracted a large number of local and international museums and public and private collections that have recognised our work, and we are very pleased to present it in Rabat at the temple of Moroccan art, the Bab Rouah Gallery.
